  The History of Badminton

Did you know that the racket sport of badminton began in this very County at Badminton House, the home of the Duke of Beaufort?

When it was in its infancy in 1873, the game was referred to as "The Game of Badminton" before it became more familiarly known simply as as Badminton.

The basic rules and regulations were drawn up 14 years later in 1887 and in 1893, the Badminton Association of England published the first set of rules according to these regulations, which were similar to today's rules.

The first All England Open Badminton Championships began in 1899.
