Gloucestershire Restricted Tournament 2010/11 There was some fantastic badminton on display over the last two weekends, as Gloucestershire Badminton Association kicked off the 2010/11 season with the County Restricted Junior and Senior tournaments at St Peters school. The GBA Chairman, Jim Edwards, was pleased to see the hall packed with budding young players who were battling for three junior age group categories. The under 11 (U11) boys singles title went to Rory Farwell who beat Louis Cottam in the final. Theo Martin and Lorcan Percer won the boys U11 doubles. Jamie Pearcy had a good day, winning the boys U13 singles and doubles with Kane McSeveney. The much improved Toby Woodford took the U15 boys singles, defeating Craig Bonger. Jake Milton and Elliot Heather won the boys U15 doubles. Ollie Wintle picked up the U17 boys singles title and also bagged the U17 boys doubles as well, with partner Toby Woodford. Nicola Gresty defeated Josephine Antoine to win the girls U15 singles and then teamed up with her younger sister Joanna, to win the girls U15 doubles. She also partnered Faye Brewster to win the girls U17 doubles. Zoe Balfour was too strong for all challengers in the U17 girls singles and took the title without dropping a game. The senior players contested the honours during the following weekend. The competition was heightened this year with new faces, particularly from the emerging Glos+Stars club and some of the younger players opting to take on the more experienced county regulars. The mens singles ran true to form and number 1 seed, Chris Hotchen and a new comer to the Gloucestershire county scene, Mathias Ankerson (number 2 seed) progressed through to meet in the final. Hotchen took the first game comfortably, but Ankerson gradually worked his way back into it and took the second game 21-19. The deciding game was an epic battle with some amazing rallies, but in the end Ankerson clinched the match 21-18 in the final game. Ankerson then teamed up with Joe Honeybone in the mens doubles and the pair fought hard to win the final against the Griffiths brothers, Joe and Solomon. The county youngsters had a big impact in the ladies singles. Three of the four semi finalists were under 16 years old. The U17 singles champion, Zoe Balfour, met Rebecca Pantaney in the final and although Balfour fought hard, Pantaneys quality was too much to overcome and Pantaney won in two games, 21-12 and 21-9. In the ladies doubles, the experienced Mandy Joiner and Linda Pearcy met Helen Corke and Pantaney in the final. This was another hotly contested match, but Corke and Pantaney managed to win in the third game 21-14. Pantaney made it a clean sweep by winning the mixed title with Hotchen, defeating Joiner and Mike Kennedy in yet another three game thriller. Gloucestershire Badminton Association officials were very pleased with the enthusiasm and quality of both the junior and senior events this year.
